Informix 4GL · Java · Application documentation

Understand the customer, order and reporting behaviour in an Informix 4GL application.

Harten’s Wayfinder documentation examines an order-management application with retained Informix 4GL programs and a Java desktop implementation. It identifies the behaviour supported by each source, the differences between them and the questions that require runtime verification.

Findings you can inspect

Order maintenance differs between the implementations

The Java order-update and order-delete handlers report that the options are unimplemented. A separate 4GL order program contains Modify and Delete paths. The documentation keeps those behaviours associated with their respective sources. Read the capability map.

Customer deletion has an unresolved business rule

The Java deletion check counts orders for the customer, while the displayed message refers to “active orders”. The source does not show a filter that limits the check to active orders. Read the business-rule analysis.

Visible transaction handling still leaves recovery questions

Order entry includes commit and rollback branches. Recovery through the broader exception handler also depends on framework behaviour that the supplied source does not establish. Read the order-entry journey.

Publication scope and source

This edition renders the retained documentation export dated 17 October 2026, including its linked gallery and topic pages. It contains no specification or modernisation-plan publication. The source repository is an upstream reference; the exact revision analysed by this export is unbound.

The documents retain reported findings, explicitly marked inference and unresolved questions. They do not establish a completed migration, production deployment or equivalent behaviour across the 4GL and Java implementations. Read the retained scope and confidence note.
